Davor Mateković’s house on the island of Vis is the third in his recent cycle of houses for an occasional stay outside of the urban context. The straw house in Kumrovec was the first one in the cycle and the stone house in Lukovo Šugarje soon followed. They are characterized by a contextual approach: phenomenological intensity, materiality, and reinterpretation of traditional local construction. In the latest realization, overcoming the material experience and deeper examination of the theme of the place are noticeable. To see the place is to discover the logic behind its manifestation and build according to these laws, that is, bring the invisible to the sphere of the visible. Architecture and place thus become an inseparable whole.
